The other day I headed over to the library to check some BBQ Books at the local library to get some new grilling ideas for this upcoming BBQ Season. One that I found that sounds interesting is Southwestern Grill by Michael McLaughlin. Recipes from the southwest have always intrigued me with the spiciness of the food, but still with great flavor.
This book definitely has some intriguing recipes in it, such as:
- Soft Tacos of Grilled Orange-Garlic Shrimp
- Crisp Lime-Marinated Chicken Grilled under a Brick
- Baby Back Ribs with Chipotle-Peanut Barbecue Sauce
- Peppery Poblano-Stuffed Rib Eye Steaks
- Smoked Pork Shoulder Adobo
The recipes that impressed me the most recipes that dealt with Sandwiches and Leftovers, such as:
- Grilled Chicken Breast Sandwiches with Bacon and Avocado Mayonnaise
- Grilled Pork Tenderloin Tortas with Smoky Black Beans and Pickled Onions
- Salpicon of Grill-Smoked Brisket (salad)
The Smoked Pork Shoulder Adobo recipe probably was the most intriguing to me out all the recipes in the book. The reason why is that I have a pulled pork recipe, that I absolutely love and I have a hard time trying other pork shoulder recipes for pulled pork. I will however definitely try the one found in this book. Unfortunately I am going to have to wait a while to try it. I have 12 Pork Shoulders to smoke in the next 5 to 6 weeks for a party, and I do not want to deviate from what is known to be good for the party. As I am doing these I will post the recipe that I currently use.
Another impressive part of this book is the sections on Marinades and Rubs, which also includes flavored butters. Most of these recipes are very simple and generally things I have in the kitchen.
Generally with recipe books, I do not try too many recipes from them. Generally a handful and that is about it, the best thing about them though, is the ideas one gets while reading through the recipes. This book definitely got my mind thinking of recipes that I can come up with. From just by reading the book, I would recommend it, but as I try a recipe or two I will let you know.
It is a well written book and covers a lot of how to grill type topics and suggestions of all sorts. If you are looking for recipes from the southwest, I would check this book out:
